Research on Learning Enhancement Africa Program (LEAP)

The audio-based LEAP was first introduced in several schools in Kenya. Data gathered from before and after LEAP indicate a remarkable impact of LEAP on absenteeism and school performance. After using LEAP for one year in 16 schools, average absenteeism decreased by 65% compared to the previous year.

One of the early participating schools was monitored over a period of four years. After the first year, the school’s mean performance in state examinations was reported to have increased by approximately 26% compared with the preceding year. After four years of LEAP implementation, the school was reported to have achieved the second-highest examination results among primary schools in Kenya.
These observations are encouraging and suggest that LEAP may be associated with improvements in school attendance and academic performance. However, the available before-and-after data do not by themselves establish a causal relationship between LEAP and the observed changes. Other educational, social and environmental factors may also have contributed.
The findings provide a basis for further research in different African countries, including longer-term and appropriately controlled studies, to better understand the potential contribution of LEAP to children’s learning, wellbeing and educational development.
